NEW YORK MARATHON TRAINING NOTES

Updated 10/4/04

This is the final pre-marathon training update of my 2 1/2 year journey. It has been 2 1/2 years since I thought "there must be something I can do". It has been 2 1/2 years since I came up with my original idea of running the Boston Marathon, despite the fact I was a novice. It has been a journey of 2 1/2 years and 3 marathons that bring me to where I am now, a month away from my final marathon in New York City.

Where does the time go?

It seems like just yesterday that Stephen yelled up the back stairs "How we doing?". It seems like just yesterday that I came home from work to find him sweating profusely on a 90 degree day taking my bathroom apart with a hammer so he could remodel it for me. It seems like just yesterday that we sat in the yard with friends, enjoying a late summer evening, along with the fire department and police department who our neighbors had called.

But on the other hand, it seems like another lifetime ago that I had a younger brother who was living and breathing, not just a memory or a figurehead for the greater good. Grieving is an indescribable process that can't be measured by time. In the same day the pain can be so fresh it feels as if it just happened, or so distant that it is a struggle to remember what his voice sounded like.

These are the things I think about as I run. I run to remember, and to forget. I run to feel like I'm doing something and because I feel powerless to do anything. I run for a million different reasons, yet ultimately I run for one reason. Stephen.

My regular running route brings me through Vinnin Square in Swampscott and past the memorial for Holly, the young girl from Marblehead who was killed crossing the street a month or so ago. It is a constant reminder that any day could bring an event that can change our lives forever. I say a prayer when I pass that spot. A prayer for Holly, and prayer for all of us still on this earth who struggle with the horrible feeling of loss. And perhaps it is that feeling that I am ultimately running from.

Thank you to everyone who has cheered for me along this long road. I will forever remember your kind thoughts and generous support.
