Obituary; Stephen M. O'Grady, 30, Boys-Girls Club director

Stephen M. "Steve" O'Grady of Salem, Little League coach and executive director of the Salem Boys and Girls Club, died Sunday evening in a car accident in Boxford. He was 30.

Born and raised in Salem, Mr. O'Grady graduated from Salem High School in 1987 and attended Salem State College.

He was the former athletic director of St. John the Evangelist School in Beverly and in 1995 became executive director of the Salem Boys and Girls Club.

An avid Boston Red Sox fan, Mr. O'Grady became coach of the Salem Little League "Reds" 14 years ago. He was nominated to the Salem Little League Board the following year and became vice president of the league in 1987. His team won five of the last six Salem citywide championship series, and he was recognized as the Coach of the Year several times. He also led Salem's district team, the Salem Nationals, in the Little League World Series as well as the freshman baseball and 1994 girl's softball teams at Salem High School. In the winter, he coached the "Redstrohs" in the Strike One Baseball League. He formerly coached basketball at St. Joseph's School in Salem.

An avid skier and bowler, Mr. O'Grady was active in local politics, in the Salem Rotary Club and in the Knights of Columbus Veragua Council 76, of which he was a Third Degree member. He also enjoyed travel.
